The Project

The Edible Degree Show is a web-based, 3D interactive experience, exploring the various end-of-year art of 40 students of Liverpool John Moores University’s Art Degree. Explore the experience on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, with nothing but a web browser. The show explores the idea of an artist’s first artwork being put onto a fridge and the memory of that experience. Within the fridges, a user is transported to the artist’s 3D environment, exploring the spaces in an immersive experience.

Showcase

The show follows on from last years interactive experience, the www.degreeshowonmars.com. Arrive back from Mars and explore this cold-filled warehouse. Tour the immersive space, packed with animations, lights, and audio. Open the fridges and step inside, transporting you to an entirely unique world filled with 3D art. Traverse through the individual realms and examine the composition and design of the student’s work.

Our Goal

Just like the Degree Show on Mars, our main goal was to create a 3D, interactive and immersive 3D website used to showcase art from various students at Liverpool John Moores University. The challenge for this project was the timeframe (2 weeks), and the large amount of student work (40+ students) and creating an experience to bring multiple 3D worlds into a coherent immersive story.

Working on desktop, tablets, and mobile devices was also a requirement and a challenge.

Challenges

Throughout this project, we overcame multiple challenges, from working with many stakeholders in such a short time frame, to building an immersive experience working through web browsers, designed for multiple devices.

As this project was to showcase the 3D art compositions of 40+ students, the management and optimisation of their work was a challenge as the students were not trained in optimising content for Web 3D. We worked closely with additional 3D modelling team to train them to work with the artists, making the process more streamlined.
